A woman stabbed her boyfriend to death while wearing her underwear in an argument on the balcony of a flat.

Ruth Carr stabbed Alan Allan in January last year after an apparent row over money.

The 33-year-old killed Mr Allan in a struggle on the balcony of a flat in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire.

Carr insisted she hit her boyfriend of just four weeks in self-defence but a jury at the High Court in Glasgow rejected the claims and convicted her of murder.

The killing of 34-year-old Mr Allan occurred around 9am on January 25 last year.

Neighbour Jill Strachan told the trial how she became aware of "a commotion".

The 39-year-old said: "There was obviously some sort of dispute with the man.

"There was a lot of shouting...to-ing and fro-ing. Initially, it seemed to be all about money. When the accused saw that she had an audience, she said something else.

"I remember her shouting: 'Phone the police, he has raped me.' She was wearing pink pants and a black bra."

The witness said she did not believe Carr's claims of being sexually assaulted.

Ms Strachan remembered the killer was clutching "quite a big purse"

She thought Carr was then punching the man, who she had never seen before.

The court was also played Ms Strachan's 999 call, after she realised Mr Allan was injured.

She told the jury: "I had never seen a murder before. It was quick but I am absolutely telling the truth."

Kirsty McDonald - another witness - told police how she had heard the couple "argue" and that Carr was shouting: "Give me my money".

Ms McDonald later agreed in court that it was "definitely not" a "normal" thing to see a half-naked woman out in a cold morning.

Mr Allan's body was discovered on the common landing. Police tried to revive him but he never recovered from the four stab wounds he suffered.

Carr claimed to police she only lashed out as Mr Allan had tried to attack her with a knife.

Judge Lady Stacey deferred sentencing for reports until February 10.
