A metal detectorist who uncovered a hoard of Viking treasure is set to sell the haul for £2m.

National Museums Scotland (NMS) is first in line to buy the trove, which was discovered in 2014 by Derek McLennan from Ayrshire.

The Galloway Hoard includes more than 100 gold and silver objects buried at the beginning of the 10th Century.

It contains dozens of items originating from across Europe and beyond and was described as the "richest collection" of Viking-age objects ever found in Britain.

NMS has been offered the first opportunity to buy the treasure by the Crown and has six months to raise £1.98m.

Director Dr Gordon Rintoul said: "The Galloway Hoard is of outstanding international significance and we are absolutely delighted that the Queen's and Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer has decided to allocate it to National Museums Scotland.

"We now have six months to raise £1.98m to acquire this unique treasure for the nation and ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations both at home and abroad."
