A driver was stabbed in the face with after being chased by two cars in a gangland attack near the M8.

Steven "Bonzo" Daniel was pursued in his vehicle from Saracen Street to Craighall Road in the Possil area of Glasgow shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Mr Daniel is the nephew of former gangland boss Jamie Daniel, who died of cancer last year.

He stopped near the Dobbie's Loan M8 slip road and was assaulted with what police described as a "bladed weapon", believed to be a knife or a machete.

Mr Daniel is being treated for facial wounds and police are treating the attack - which was initially reported as a shooting - as attempted murder.

The cars believed to have been used by the attackers were later found burned out.

A black Audi was discovered on Forge Street, Germiston, while a silver Volkswagen was recovered on Balmuildy Road, Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire.

Detective chief inspector John Kennedy said he was unable to confirm whether the attack was connected to the fatal drive-by shooting of Euan Johnston last year.

"We are at a very early stage in this inquiry but I do believe that this is a targeted attack and we are treating it as an attempted murder," he said.

"I appreciate that people will automatically want to link this to other incidents in the past few months but until I know more, I am unable to confirm that is the case.

"Understandably, the local community and businesses will be concerned by this incident but I have a team of experienced detectives dedicated to this inquiry to establish the full circumstances.

"There are also high-visibility patrols by uniformed officers throughout the local area.

"What I would say is that I believe there are people in our communities who know who is responsible for this incident.

"There are brothers, sisters, parents and other family members who know exactly what is going on and who is behind it.

"This victim appears to have been targeted but he's also someone's son and if there are people out there who know anything about who is responsible, I would urge them to do the right thing and contact us."
