A man who murdered a pensioner by stabbing him in the back has been jailed for life.

Peter Telfer was caught on CCTV attacking 76-year-old John Baker in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow.

The pensioner, who had recently been given the all-clear from cancer, later died at the city's Royal Infirmary.

The attack happened after Telfer robbed a woman of her bag outside Glasgow Central Station.

It emerged during his trial at the High Court in Glasgow that Tefler had wished police luck finding Mr Baker's killer.

Sentencing him on Wednesday to a minimum of 21 years in jail, judge Lord Matthews told Telfer: "For no reason which I can discern, you twice stabbed John Baker, a defenceless 76-year-old man, as a result of which he died.

"Your appalling conduct was caught on CCTV and that chilling footage showed you engaged in the most cowardly of behaviour, targeting women and then stabbing Mr Baker in the back.

"He had the guts to turn and face you before you made off as if nothing had happened."

The attack on June 29 happened after Telfer robbed Victoria Weston of her bag outside Glasgow Central Station.

Telfer then tried to rob Karen Bowman of her bag at a bus stop in the Trongate before making his way to Bridgeton, where the murder took place.

Telfer had been granted bail two days earlier on June 27 after being charged with an alleged assault and attempted robbery at a shop on Shettleston Road.

Lord Matthews said Mr Baker had recently recovered from a stroke and a triple heart bypass as well as being given the all-clear from cancer and having a kidney removed.

He said the 76-year-old had been "looking forward to a holiday to celebrate".
