A teenager is to stand trial charged with killing a baby boy by attacking his pregnant mother.

The 17-year-old boy is accused of assaulting the woman, causing a "placental abruption" resulting in the baby being born by emergency caesarean section.

The birth occurred on the day of the alleged attack, November 3 last year. The child died in hospital five days after the incident.

At the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday, the accused denied a charge of culpable homicide.

Lady Rae set a trial due to begin in September.

The assault on the baby's mother is said to have occurred at a number of addresses in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire. She was 36 weeks pregnant at the time.

The indictment includes claims the teenager kicked her on the stomach, chased her and caused her to "flee and fall".

It is alleged he did "repeatedly inflict blunt force trauma on her head and body".

The teenager faces a separate charge of assaulting the woman between January and November 2016.

This includes a claim he threw fire crackers at her, as well as punching and kicking her.

He stands accused of behaving in a threatening manner towards the baby's mother and another woman.

Prosecutors allege he broke wardrobe mirrors and threw furniture. The 17-year-old, the baby and his mother cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Gary Allan, defending, entered not guilty pleas to the three charges.
