The National Museum of Scotland has put a £2m Viking treasure hoard on display for the first time.

The trove was found by metal detectorist Derek McLennan from Ayrshire in Scotland in 2014.

National Museums Scotland heads the queue to buy the stash.

The Galloway Hoard includes more than 100 gold and silver objects buried at the beginning of the 10th century.

A selection of items has gone on short-term display at the museum in Edinburgh in a bid to help NMS raise funds to buy the hoard.

It has six months to find £1.98m or the stash will be offered to others.

Director Dr Gordon Rintoul said: "I would encourage everyone to come along to the National Museum of Scotland to enjoy a first glimpse of this outstanding Viking-age silver.

"There is not much time and we are seeking the public's support in saving this extraordinary treasure."
