A man is fighting for his life after being arrested near the Barras in Glasgow.

The incident happened on London Road at 6.30pm on Thursday.

The 37-year-old was arrested by police before taking unwell when he was put in handcuffs.

He was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary in a life-threatening condition after officers had to call an ambulance.

It is understood he fell ill after taking drugs.

The road was closed between Ross Street and Kent Street while police investigated the incident.

A cordon was put in place for several hours before the road reopened on Friday morning.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At around 6.30pm on Thursday, officers were in London Road near to the Barras and arrested a 37-year-old man as part of an ongoing investigation.

"Officers then called an ambulance after the man had taken unwell.

"The man was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where medical staff describe his condition as life-threatening."
