A man has appeared in court charged with murdering another man by repeatedly hitting him on the head with a hammer.

James Brennan, 57, appeared at the High Court in Glasgow on Monday accused of the murder of 46-year-old John Cameron in his home in the city.

Brennan is charged with repeatedly hitting Mr Cameron on the head and body with a hammer and stamping on his body at Stonebank Grove, Castlemilk, Glasgow, on February 16.

He is also alleged to have assaulted a woman to the danger of her life by repeatedly striking her on the head and body with a hammer.

Brennan is charged with stealing drugs and money from a house in Stonebank Grove, also on February 16.

He is further accused of attempting to defeat the ends of justice by disposing of clothing and footwear and threatening to kill the woman and her children if she spoke to the authorities.

He also faces charges of possessing heroin and being concerned in its supply on February 16 and 17.

Brennan denies all the charges.

Defence QC Donald Findlay said: "The trial is expected to last 10 to 12 days."

Judge Lord Burns set trial for September at the High Court in Edinburgh.
