A police officer has been injured after a hit-and-run near a sports centre.

The incident happened on Ness Drive in East Kilbride, close to the John Wright Sport Centre in Calderwood Road.

The officer, 29, was taken to Hairmyres Hospital after being struck by an Audi A4 around 8.30pm on Wednesday.

He is said to be in a stable condition after suffering leg injuries.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the collision.

A police spokeswoman said: "Around 8.30pm on Wednesday, police approached an Audi A4 car in Ness Drive, East Kilbride, and whist carrying out enquiries, the driver of the car allegedly drove at a male officer before driving off.

"The 29-year-old officer was taken to Hairmyres Hospital where he is currently being treated for a leg injury. Hospital staff describe his condition as stable.

"The Audi car was traced a short time later and a 38-year-old man was arrested and detained in police custody in connection with the incident."

The suspect is expected to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

There was a large police presence around the sports centre for several hours in response to the alleged hit-and-run.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 8.37pm on Wednesday to attend an incident on Ness Drive in East Kilbride.

"We dispatched one ambulance and a paramedic response unit.

"The first unit arrived on scene within three minutes.

"One male patient was taken to Hairmyres Hospital."
