A missing psychiatric patient is believed to have made a 200-mile journey to an English town stowed away in the back of a lorry.

Abdelnabi Alainani disappeared from Midpark Hospital in Dumfries on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old was armed with a knife but police later found the weapon close to the hospital.

He has been described as "potentially dangerous" and officers released CCTV images in a bid to track him down.

On Thursday, police said they were following "positive lines of inquiry" after a HGV driver saw a man "climb out of his lorry and run off" when he stopped in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire.

The lorry had travelled 200 miles from Dumfries.

A police helicopter was involved in the search for Mr Alainani in Dumfries on Tuesday.

Students at Dumfries and Galloway College were kept inside the campus, while parents of pupils at nearby primary schools were contacted and asked to collect their children.

Mr Alainani is 5ft 7in, of Asian appearance and has curly dark hair.

He was wearing a grey T-shirt, blue jeans and trainers.
