A police investigation has been launched over claims an elderly man tried to abduct a boy near a school.

The incident is said to have happened on Carwood Street near King's Oak Primary School in Greenock on Thursday.

An investigation is under way after the concerned mother contacted police to say an attempt was made to abduct her boy before she was forced to run away from the man.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "I can confirm police received a report of an incident in Carwood Street, Greenock, that occurred at about 12.15pm on Thursday involving an elderly man and a young child.

"Enquiries are currently ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident."
