A man was stabbed in the face during rush hour at a train station in South Lanarkshire.

The victim, who is in his 40s, was attacked at Cambuslang railway station just after 9am on Friday.

He was taken to hospital with a stab wound to his face.

The man's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Shortly before the stabbing, there was a fight between a man on foot and the occupant of a taxi in Queens Avenue, just under a mile away from the station.

Detective inspector Grant Cathcart said: "This was a particularly nasty assault during a busy period in the morning and I am appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"We know the station was busy with passengers at the time.

"If you travelled through this station at approximately 9am and witnessed an altercation please get in touch as soon as possible.

"In addition, I am keen to speak to anyone who may have seen an altercation on Queens Avenue in Cambuslang shortly before this incident involving a man on foot and an occupant of a taxi.

"Our investigation is fast moving and we are examining a number of positive lines of inquiry while we aim to understand exactly how this man came to receive his injuries.

"Thankfully violent assaults such as this are uncommon, but when they do occur we will use all available evidence to find those responsible and bring them before the courts."
