A 48-year-old man required surgery after an attempted murder in Hamilton.

The attack happened around 2.45am on Saturday in Comely Bank, in what police are saying was targeted.

Emergency services attended and the man was taken to Hairmyers hospital.

The injured man is believed to have been chased by two suspects, armed with weapons who were attempting to conceal their identity.

Locals believe the attack "may be drug related".

The first suspect is described as, male, between 5ftin to 5ft9in tall, with a slim build, wearing a dark coloured hooded top, dark coloured bottoms and dark coloured shoes.

The second suspect is: male, around 5ft6in to 5ft7in tall, with a slim build, wearing a dark coloured hooded top, dark coloured bottoms and light coloured shoes.

Officers are treating the incident as attempted murder.

Detective Sergeant Ronnie Douglas said: "We are in the process of piecing together the circumstances of what has happened.

"We need to establish the motive for this attack which has left a 48-year-old man seriously injured."

Additional officers will be patrolling the area to reassure members of the public
