Firefighters abseiled into a ravine to rescue an injured walker trapped after a fall.

Fire crews and two coastguard teams were sent to Maybole in South Ayrshire at 10pm on Saturday.

After locating the 49-year-old, specially-trained firefighters descended into the ravine and pulled him out.

The walker, who reportedly fell around 70ft, suffered a head injury and was treated at Ayr Hospital.

A spokesman for the Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team said: "We were called out late last night (Saturday) as part of a multi-agency response to a reports of a person trapped down a ravine south of Maybole.

"The team responded immediately along with colleagues from Girvan Coastguard Rescue Team.

"Once on scene, the team remained on standby to assist with both technical rope rescue and water rescue as our colleagues from Scottish Fire and Rescue executed a successful rescue of the casualty from down the ravine."

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Team added: "Our specialist rope rescue teams brought the individual to safety who was then transferred into the care of paramedics."
