A man has been charged with murdering his mother by burning her alive.

William Kelly faced the claim during a short hearing at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday.

The 41-year-old is accused of killing Catherine Kelly at a house in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, in February.

Prosecutors allege Kelly initially dragged his 71-year-old mother from a car into the property.

It is claimed he punched and kicked the former factory worker before putting her face-down on a carpet.

The murder charge states Kelly then poured petrol over body and set fire to her.

Kelly was also accused of assaulting and attempting to murder Ms Kelly at the same house last November and again assaulting her in January.

Other charges allege he attacked his partner Eleanor Banks between 2015 and 2017, on one occasion hitting her with a hammer.

His QC Gordon Jackson pled not guilty on his behalf and Judge Lord Burns set a trial to begin in November.
