A 72-year-old motorcyclist who died in a crash in Dumfries and Galloway has been named by police.

David Arthur Shilton, from Wallyford in East Lothian, died at the scene of the crash off the A708 near Moffat at around 7.45pm on Wednesday.

Police said he was riding a green BMW R1100 along with a group of other bikers when his bike careered off the road and crashed.

The road was closed for eight hours while officers investigated the scene.

Constable Scott McCreadie said: "The dead man appears to have been travelling at the rear of a group of motorcyclists when the crash happened.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this crash to come forward and contact Police Scotland's road policing unit at Dumfries on 101."
