A man is seriously injured after being deliberately mowed down by a car in North Ayrshire.

The 29-year-old was walking along a footpath in Wingate Avenue, Dalry, at around 9.40pm on Wednesday when he was driven at and then struck by a small red car.

He was taken to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment, where medical staff describe his condition as serious.

The car involved drove off at speed heading towards St Margaret Avenue.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

Detective sergeant Ross Black said: "Enquiries are at an early stage to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this incident and to trace the vehicle involved and its driver.

"Officers have been carrying out enquiries in the local area and I would ask anyone who was in the area of Wingate Avenue who witnessed this incident to contact us.

"I would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen a red vehicle being driven at speed in Dalry on Wednesday night to come forward, as they may have information that will assist our enquiry."
