An elderly woman has died after being rescued from the River Clyde.

The 81-year-old was pulled from the river, near Greenock Esplanade, around 1.40pm on Monday.

Emergency services, lifeboat and coastguard teams rushed to the scene after a member of the public raised the alarm around 12.50pm.

She was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital but staff were unable to save her.

It is not known how the woman ended up in the water and officers are trying to establish if she fell or took unwell.

A police spokeswoman said there are no suspicious circumstances.
