A man who was seriously injured in an explosion at a derelict pastoral centre has died.

Two men who were working inside the centre in Newmains, Wishaw last Thursday were injured in the blast.

Residents were evacuated following the explosion at the Newmains Pastoral Centre on Bonkle Road.

Police have confirmed a 23-year-old man who had been seriously injured in the explosion died on Monday night.

A 26-year-old man who was also injured remains in a serious condition.

Two others who had been working in the centre escaped unharmed.

Police Scotland the the Health and Safety Executive are carrying out a joint investigation into the cause of the explosion.

A spokeswoman for gas firm SGN said earlier: "Following reports of a small explosion at lunchtime on Bonkle Road, Wishaw, our engineers joined the emergency services on site.

"Our engineers made the situation safe by turning off the gas supply to the building.

"We understand several people are injured and are being treated in hospital. Our thoughts are with them and their family.

"The cause of the explosion is under investigation."
