A man has been found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl in a "disgusting and degrading attack" near an Iceland supermarket.

Samuel Ciornei, 20, followed the teenager to a car park behind the shop near Arthurlie Street in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, on August 7 last year.

He then got hold of the girl's bike, grabbed her by the hair and threatened her with a piece of glass from a bottle of Guinness.

Mr Ciornei then made her crawl into bushes and held her down before raping her.

The teenager was so scared she did what she was told before being subjected to a seven-minute rape and sexual assault by her attacker.

The Romanian national was unanimously found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday.

Judge Kenneth Maciver told Ciornei: "This was a disgusting and degrading attack on an innocent young girl who was simply out to enjoy a cycle on a quiet summer evening.

"She was entitled to feel safe, but she was not safe. She was unfortunate enough to encounter you and she was subjected to a violent attack which will live with her forever.

"Words cannot express the revulsion which society feels about such attacks of sexual violence."

The schoolgirl cycled to a nearby Asda to buy sweets and chained her bike outside ,where she saw Ciornei sitting nearby.

When she returned she noticed it had a flat tyre and walked it to a car park behind an Iceland supermarket to inspect it, where Ciornei attacked her.

The teenager described being in "quite a state", unable to breathe and "hyperventilating" before police were called.

CCTV footage captured Ciornei "directing or pushing" the girl into the bushes before disappearing after her.

Seven minutes later they emerged and she was seen breaking free from him and fleeing.

Labourer Ciornei, who left school to become a shepherd, only arrived in Scotland on July 19 last year when he stayed with family in Barrhead.

Ciornei was put on the sex offenders register and will be sentenced next month.

Detective chief inspector Gillian Patrick said: "Samuel Ciornei is a dangerous individual and we welcome the result from court.

"This was an incident which shocked the local community of Barrhead however I would like to reassure people that this type of crime is relatively rare.

"This was an incredibly traumatic experience for the young girl concerned, who had simply been out in the local area before being attacked by Ciornei, who was a stranger to her and whose motivation was not only sexual but opportunistic as he also robbed her of her personal belongings."

He added: "I would like to commend the bravery of the young girl, who stood and gave evidence to the jury of her ordeal despite it being a very difficult experience to revisit."
