A nine-year-old boy has been shown setting off a rocket in a Snapchat video.

Police Scotland shared the video as they investigate how he came to be in possession of fireworks and to highlight safety ahead of Bonfire Night.

The incident is thought to have taken place in Locharbriggs, near Dumfries, and came to light on Thursday last week.

The video shows the nine-year-old lighting the firework's fuse and running away before it shoots into the air.

It was filmed by one of his friends and uploaded to the instant messaging app but the video clip came to the attention of the police.

A post from the force on Facebook said: "Fireworks are dangerous and it's vital that we remind people that fireworks are explosives, not toys, and are dangerous if misused.

"Make sure your kids know the dangers before someone gets hurt!"

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We are investigating issues around how he got the fireworks."

It is understood police officers will speak to the boy.
