A man in a wheelchair has been seriously injured after being hit by a lorry.

Officers have closed Dalrymple Street in Greenock, Inverclyde, following the incident at 11.45am on Wednesday.

The man has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At around 11.45pm on Wednesday, a man in a wheelchair was struck by an articulated lorry on Dalrymple Street, Greenock.

"He has been taken by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

"Enquiries are continuing and Dalrymple Street has been closed to allow officers to carry out their inquiries."

Drivers are experiencing huge delays through the town.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman added: "We dispatched one ambulance, our special operations response team, a manager and the trauma team to the scene.

"One male patient in his 40s was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital accompanied by the trauma team."
