A convicted killer who escaped from police custody has been arrested.

Walter Bett had been last seen near Crow Wood Golf Course in Muirhead, Lanarkshire four days ago after he absconded from an external work-placement.

The 39-year-old has been in jail for 10-years after admitting to cutting a man's throat in Hamilton.

He subjected victim Alex Poole to an hour-long attack, stabbing him, hitting his body and stamping on his head before cutting his throat.

Mr Poole was discovered and taken to hospital, but was left brain-damaged and in need of 24-hour care.

Bett was also jailed for culpable homicide when he was a teenager in 1996.

A Police spokesman said: "A 39-year-old man has been arrested and is presently detained in police custody."
