A 37-year-old woman has been killed in a two-car collision in North Ayrshire.

At around 6.10pm on Saturday, the woman was driving a grey Seat Ibiza near Burnhouse, when she collided with a car being driven by a 57-year-old man on the A736.

Emergency services attended but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man, in a bronze Renault Grand Scenic, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he is being treated for leg injuries.

Hospital staff describe his condition as stable.

Sergeant Ian Thornton said: "Enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the crash and we are appealing for any witnesses to the crash, or anyone who may have seen the vehicles being driven prior to the collision.

"Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact Irvine Police Office through 101."
