A huge blaze has ripped through a community centre in South Lanarkshire, with 40 firefighters sent to the scene.

The fire happened at Blantyre Miners Community Resource Centre on Calder Street near Asda on Monday.

Nearby Auchinraith Primary has been closed while firefighters deal with the blaze.

The building is believed to have been empty when the fire broke out at around 2am and nobody has been injured.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are attending a fire on Calder Street in Blantyre.

"We were called to a community centre there at 1.50am and the fire is still ongoing."

Eight fire engines, including two aerial appliances and a forward control unit, were sent to the scene.
