Boy, six, died at orphanage after 'contracting E Coli'
Professor says Sammy Carr caught a fatal infection from playing with a rat in 1964.
A six-year-old boy who died while in the care of a Lanarkshire orphanage had most likely contracted a fatal infection from playing with a rat, an inquiry has been told.
The Scottish Child Abuse inquiry has heard from Professor Anthony Busuttil, who carried out a review of the death of Sammy Carr.
A witness has previously told the inquiry Sammy died after being beaten by nuns at Smyllum Park in Lanark in 1964.
On Tuesday, Prof Busuttil said the six-year-old most likely died after contracting E Coli from playing with a rat.
Professor Busuttil is a forensic pathologist based at Edinburgh University.
More than 60 residential institutions, including several top private schools, are being investigated by Lady Smith's Inquiry.
