A man rammed a broken bottle into his victim's stomach in an unprovoked attack near Glasgow Central Station.

Steven Dunn, 41, admitted assaulting 24-year-old Kwadwo Afum to the danger of his life on Gordon Street at about 9.45pm on August 19.

Dunn was originally charged with the attempted murder of Mr Afum but his guilty plea to the reduced charge was accepted by the prosecution at the High Court in Glasgow.

Prosecutor Allan Nicol told the court the incident was captured on CCTV cameras.

He said: "Mr Afum is seen to stop and engage with customers in a queue for the Blue Lagoon fish shop. He appears to be in good spirits and is cuddling some of the people in the queue."

Seconds later Dunn picked up a discarded beer bottle, smashed it against a wall and thrust the broken end into Mr Afum's stomach.

After the stabbing both men scuffled. The accused was restrained by bystanders but managed to run off.

A chest X-ray revealed a piece of broken glass had lodged near Mr Afum's spleen and he had to undergo an emergency operation to remove it.

Mr Nicol told the court: "The potential consequences of not receiving any medical treatment would be a wound infection and sepsis, and had the glass moved it would have led to internal bleeding."

Solicitor advocate Callum Weir said: "My client has little recollection of the incident."

He said words were exchanged between the two men before Dunn lashed out with the bottle.

Judge Lord Burns ordered a risk assessment and deferred sentence on Dunn until next month at the High Court in Edinburgh.
