Two guests have died after the Cameron House Hotel went up in flames.

The fire ripped through the five-star hotel at Loch Lomond shortly after 6.40am on Monday.

One person died at the scene while another died in hospital.

Three people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation but later released.

STV News reporter James Cheyne, who is flying over the scene in a helicopter, said: "The damage is confined to one wing of the building but obviously extensive.

"Several hours on, smoke is still pouring out whilst firefighters on cranes are still pouring water in."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Four people were taken to hospital, one to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, who later died.

"A further three people were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment."

More than 200 residents were evacuated from the building to the nearby Boathouse Restaurant.

Smoke could be seen for miles as crews battled the blaze, which caused extensive damage.

The hotel will remain closed for the next 72 hours.

Andy Roger, resort director at the hotel, said: "The safety and well-being of our guests, employees and neighbours is our first priority, and our deepest condolences are with the families of those affected.

"We are working closely with the authorities to determine the cause of the fire, and to provide support to our guests and the families of those affected."

The 18th century Baronial mansion was converted into a luxury hotel and resort in 1986 after it was sold by the Smollett family - who held the property for three centuries.

It is famous as a celebrity wedding venue as well as for its championship standard golf course and Michelin-starred restaurant run by chef Martin Wishart.
