Passengers are facing lengthy delays after faults were found on rail lines in Edinburgh and South Lanarkshire.

A signal fault was found on the line between Haymarket and Edinburgh Waverley, while freezing temperatures overnight led to points icing up in Rutherglen.

The fault in Edinburgh caused severe disruption for services to Glasgow, Aberdeen and Fife.

ScotRail said the issue was discovered around 8am and delays are expected until midday on Wednesday.

Delays are also expected on the line between Glasgow and Whifflet in North Lanarkshire until around 11am.

Network Rail said temperatures had dropped to -14C around Rutherglen overnight.
