This king sized cat is one of the fattest in Scotland.

Elvis, from Clydebank, Glasgow, has been signed up to the PDSA Pet Fit Club after his owner, Carol Sweeney, 55, was told he was double the size of his ideal weight.

Carol didn't realise how big her boy had got until comments from friends and family drew her attention.

Elvis tips the scale at 10kg - double the recommended weight of 5kg for cats.

Carol took Elvis to the vet for a check up who told her it was "now or never" for the moggy, whose weight left his health at risk.

Carol said she'd been feeding her pet out of love, not realising it was doing more harm than good.

Carol added: "I never gave Elvis treats or human food, but I've since learned that his portion sizes were way out of control.

"He basically had his own all-day buffet, whenever he emptied his bowl I would fill it back up again. The fact that he's an indoor cat meant he soon piled on the weight."

The King has now been signed up for the fit club and is on a strict portion controlled diet.

PDSA vet Rebecca Ashman said: "Sadly the UK's pet population is suffering from an obesity epidemic.

"Latest scientific literature shows that at least a third of dogs and a quarter of cats are clinically overweight or obese, but the true figures could be as high as 40%, making obesity one of the most common medical diseases seen by vets.

"It is a ticking time bomb that will have drastic consequences for our pets."
