A woman was left trapped after a car careered off a road and crashed into the sea.

Emergency services were called to the water at Kirkcolm near Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway, at 1.30am on Monday.

The woman was trapped before managing to free herself from the Vauxhall Corsa and was rescued at the edge of the water.

She has been taken to the Galloway Community Hospital with mild hypothermia.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police tasked Stranraer RNLI Lifeboat, Stranraer Coastguard and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in Dumfries and Galloway to attend to assist with the rescue.

"The woman managed to escape the car and was rescued near to the water's edge where she was conveyed to hospital for treatment.

"Thanks to all the rescue services for their quick response.

"Recovery of the vehicle is taking place today."
