Seventeen car crashes were reported to police in three hours due to the heavy snow.

Officers in Dumfries and Galloway dealt with the road accidents between 8.40am and 12 noon on Tuesday.

The largest number of reported crashes happened on the A74, on both the north and southbound carriageways.

Collisions also happened on the A75 near Eastriggs, the A701 near Beattock and at Johnstonebridge, and the A709 at Torthorwald, which had a four-vehicle smash.

There were no serious injuries in any of the incidents, however, one woman had to be rescued from her car after it was flipped on its side on the A75 near Eastriggs.

A number of roads had to be closed for short periods of time to allow the recovery of vehicles, causing some traffic build up.
