A charity that helps pensioners find friends have hosted a Valentine's Day party.

Friendship Circle in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, started out as an outreach programme by the Milngavie Churches to help the housebound and lonely in the area, but is now a charity in its own right.

Once a week, elderly people come together for some company and a good chat about the good old days but on Wednesday it was romance on their mind as around 35 of them attended a special Valentine's Day party.

One of the woman in attendance was 96-year-old Georgena Bell, who describes the club as a "life saver".

She said: "This has been an absolute life saver because the worst thing in old age is the loneliness, I haven't been outside my front door in a fortnight.

"This is the day I most look forward to every week."

But Ms Bell doesn't think today's younger generation are a match for their elderly counterparts.

She said: "I don't think that men today are nearly as romantic as they were in my day.

"I had a wonderful husband but he never sent me a Valentine's Card.

"I always got flowers and chocolates though so whether that is better or not I really don't know."

The group, led by volunteer Jennifer Donald, made sure everyone attending the party would have gifts of flowers and chocolates to enjoy - and transport was provided for those who needed it.

Friendship Circle hosts a get together every Wednesday providing coffee, tea, lunch and afternoon tea in Milngavie's Lesser Town Hall.

James McLaughlin, who has been coming to the club for around eight years said: "It is the only thing I have to look forward to.

"I like all the companionship from the people that are here.

"I come along for a chat and to talk about the war-time experiences.

"But when I came in here today, I was shanghaied by two dolly burds asking me 'can I be your Valentine?' and I had to get away quick."

The group is for any older person who feels lonely or are housebound because of their health.
