The Japanese-manufactured trains were originally expected in the autumn of 2017 but are now due to enter the fleet in March.

A ScotRail spokesman said: "Once our brand new electric Hitachi Class 385 trains enter service we will return to full capacity - and actually increase the number of carriages we are able to run."

A reduced fare of £13 for the Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh via Airdrie route is available until May 19.
