The M80 has now fully reopened after more than a day of gridlock.

Thousands of vehicles were stranded in tailbacks at Cumbernauld and Denny, Falkirk, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Emergency services battled the chaos for more than a day in some of the worst travel conditions experienced in Scotland in recent years.

Some drivers had to be rescued by armed police officers while fuel, water and blankets were delivered to help motorists trapped overnight.

Officers are urging people to stay clear of the M80 as more snow is expected on Thursday night and Friday.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Following congestion and traffic build up due to the adverse weather, we are pleased to report that the M80 is now clear in both directions, although drivers are still advised to avoid the area."
