Five families have been snowed in at neighbouring farmhouses in South Lanarkshire for three days.

Derek and Pamela Mailler, who live in one of the houses at the converted Springfield Farm on Yieldshields Road, Carluke, have appealed for help from local farmers to dig them out.

The snowdrift, several feet high, has completely blocked their driveways and the couple have now ran out of bread and milk.

Mr Mailler said four families in the other farmhouses on the site are also stranded.

Unofficial snow depths reported by STV weather presenter Sean Batty on Thursday range from 20cm to 49cm in areas including Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Stirling and as far north as Perth.

The so-called "beast from the east" has brought freezing temperatures, blizzard conditions and extremely heavy snowfall to Scotland since Wednesday.

Mr Mailler told STV News: "We have asked South Lanarkshire Council for help but have had no reply. We now have no milk or bread and can't get out to get any.

"If any of the local farmers out there could give us a hand to dig out the drive, we would be very grateful.

"We have been stuck here for three days now and due to the wind, we cannot clear anywhere because it just blows back worse."

He added: "It is just my wife and myself stranded in our house, but there are also four other families in the other houses on the farm."
