Lottery winner Colin Weir has handed Partick Thistle a £600,000 donation for their youth academy.

The Jags fan has been a major backer of the Thistle Weir Youth Academy since it was founded in 2013.

Colin and his wife Christine won £161m on the Euromillions in 2011.

Weir said in a statement on the club's website: "Players are coming through to the first team and it's great to see us really starting to grow our own.

"This money will help that to continue at pace and perhaps see money come back to the club as players move on.

"I hear regularly what's happening at the academy and this donation should signal that I continue to be impressed with what's being achieved, at all levels."

Partick Thistle will soon begin the new season in the Championship after losing a relegation play-off to Livingston in May.

The Weirs have backed a number of causes since hitting the jackpot, including donating almost £5m to the Scottish National Party.

They also donated more than £3m to the Yes campaign during the Scottish independence referendum.
