A family had to be rescued by firefighters after their car became submerged in 3ft of rising water in Glasgow.

A burst water main has caused chaos on Friday morning as a flood, stretching 400m of road, led to major disruptions.

Repair teams were called to Phoenix Road close to the sliproad for the M8 before 7am.

The burst main has caused issues to supplies, affecting 25,000 customers, with about 5000 still affected.

Angel Pillow, 47, a tourist from Washington DC, was travelling with her husband, daughter and another family of three, when their van got stuck in rising water.

She said: "We were following a double decker bus through a water main break so our van could get through and our van froze up midway and got stuck.

"By that point the water was coming in through the side doors and the backdoor and our luggage got wet.

"When the firefighters arrived they took us out through the windows and side doors on a raft.

"We were a little panicked, we're in a foreign country, we don't understand how Glasgow's fire and rescue work here, it's very different to in the states.

"At first when we called they were telling us we didn't need police, fire or rescue because nobody's in a medical emergency.

"We had to tell them it could turn into a medical emergency so they better send someone down."

Areas currently affected by the burst water main are Garscube Road and postcodes in G3, G4, G20 , G21, G22, G23 and G31.

A spokeswoman for Scottish Water said: "Engineers are currently on site repairing a burst water main in Garscube Road, Glasgow.

"They are working hard to restore supplies to customers affected.

"Scottish Water apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks everyone for their patience and understanding."

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 7.52am on Friday to reports of flooding caused by a burst water main near Garscube Road, Glasgow.

"Operations control mobilised a number of fire engines and a specialist water rescue unit to the scene and firefighters assisted six people from a van which had become stranded.

"Crews currently remain at the scene as they work to make the area safe."
