Hundreds of mourners have gathered in Coatbridge for the funeral of six-year-old Alesha MacPhail.

Alesha was found dead following a search in Rothesay, Isle of Bute, where she was visiting her dad and grandparents, earlier this month.

A 16-year-old boy, who can't be named for legal reasons, has since been charged with her rape and murder.

Mourners wore pink to remember Alesha during the funeral in the North Lanarkshire town.

The six-year-old's body was taken to MacGregor's funeral home on Saturday morning.

An order of service handed out to mourners said she was "now in the arms of the angels."

During the service, Alesha's headteacher Wendy Davie was among those paying tribute.

She said: "She always helped anyone who needed it.

"She was born for the stage.

"She said good morning to everyone at breakfast club and had to hurry down her own breakfast."

Alesha's uncle Calum MacPhail said she was "an old head on young shoulders" who loved gymnastics, swimming and going out on her bike.

He said the six-year-old's proudest day was when she threw away her stabilisers.

He said: "She was the best friend, best daughter, best sister, best niece anyone could ask for."

Following the service Alesha's pink coffin was taken to a private burial ceremony at Coltswood Cemetery on a horse-drawn hearse.

Around 600 people attended the service on Saturday.

The schoolgirl's death on Monday, July 2 sparked a huge outpouring of grief.

A crowdfunder was launched to raise money for her family, while a vigil on Bute was held in her memory.

Vigil organiser Carolashley Dickson told STV News: "It's touched everybody but I don't think anybody can even imagine what the family are going through right now.

"So this is just a gesture from us to say: 'Look, we kind of know you feel and we're there."

In a post with video on social media, Alesha's uncle said Calum MacPhail: "Me and my family would like to thank you for your ongoing support.

"I would also like to let yous see what sort of lovely wee girl my niece was and also what whoever has done this has taken from us.

"I am never going to be able to have this much fun with Alesha again but at least I have this memory of her."

He added: "There's a lot more I want to say but I just can't word it at this time. "Rest in peace Alesha, I love you so much. Love uncle Calum."
