Two people were stabbed after a large-scale disturbance broke out before a Europa League clash between Rangers and Croatian side Osijek in Glasgow.

Large numbers of officers and police vehicles were sent to the scene on Paisley Road West, near to Rangers' Ibrox Stadium, around 7pm on Thursday.

Witnesses on Twitter reported seeing bottles and rocks being thrown at groups of supporters as people made their way to the game.

There were also reports of flares being hurled and people being assaulted with weapons.

Police mounted units and a helicopter were sent in and crews from the Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance.

A police spokesman later confirmed two men, aged 24 and 40, had been stabbed during the brawl.

Both were taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment and are described as being in a stable condition.

Paisley Road West was closed at the junction with Edmiston Drive while the incident was being dealt with.

Detective inspector Steven Wallace is now appealing for anyone with information on the brawl to come forward.

He said: "This type of violent behaviour will not be tolerated and it is absolutely vital anyone with information that could assist with our investigation comes forward.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and witnessed a disturbance, particularly anyone with mobile phone or dash-cam footage, to get in touch.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Govan CID via 101. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence."
