A restaurant has suffered significant damage after a fire in Glasgow.

Thai Orchid has been forced to temporarily close following the blaze on Argyle Street at 3.50pm on Friday.

The owners said the restaurant will be shut for weeks due to the extensive damage.

Smoke was seen billowing from several buildings while the nearby Alexander Thomson Hotel was also evacuated.

In a post on social media, the restaurant's owners said: "We are terribly sorry to announce that the restaurant has suffered significant damage due to the fire.

"We will be closed for the next few weeks to get everything back in order and re-decorate our restaurant.

"We will endeavour to bring Thai Orchid back up and running as soon as possible. Please stay tuned for any updates on our re-opening.

"Thank you for your understanding and our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused."
