A Marks and Spencer store in Scotland is among seven which closed their doors on Saturday as part of a £350m cost-cutting drive.

The retailer's Falkirk branch shut on Saturday, along with six others in England.

M&S intends to shut 100 stores across the UK by 2022 and at least one more Scottish branch, in East Kilbride, is expected to close in the near future.

Chairman Archie Norman said the size of the company's portfolio had become "a drag on our performance".

"For me the results in the next two years aren't the most important thing. We are here to deliver a profitable, growing business in five years' time," Mr Norman said.

M&S has faced competition from both online retailers and high street discounters like Aldi, Lidl and Primark.
