A man has been filmed kicking a seagull which was eating chips on the ground in Ayr.

The Scottish SPCA is trying to trace the man following the incident on Saturday, July 28.

Footage of the man, seen on the junction between Carrick Street and Bowell Park, was shared on social media.

The man can be seen kicking a seagull as it was eating chips which had been dropped on the ground. The bird then flies off after the attack.

An undercover inspector from the charity's special investigations unit said: "We are being assisted by Police Scotland in our investigation and we would like to trace the individual involved and would urge anyone who recognises him to get in touch.

"Any information given to our animal helpline is treated confidentially and can be given anonymously.

"Recently we have been made aware of a number of incidents involving attacks on seagulls and would like to remind the public that gulls, like all other birds, are protected by law.

"We'd encourage the public to clear up any rubbish as gulls are attracted to it as they look for food."

Those concerned about the welfare of an animal can contact the Scottish SPCA helpline on 03000 999 999.
