A driver is being treated for serious injuries after a crash in a South Lanarkshire village.

The 32-year-old was driving a Smart car on the B7078 Carlisle Road in Blackwood, near Motherwell, when his vehicle collided with a Ford Transit van around 5.40pm on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the man was taken by air ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

He is being treated for head and chest injuries and staff at the hospital describe his condition as serious.

The 61-year-old driver of the Ford was treated as the scene for minor injuries.

Sergeant John Tait of Police Scotland is appealing for any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information to contact him on 101 quoting reference number 3025 of August 13.
