A boy who was brought to Scotland from Pakistan as a baby after being severely burned in a gas explosion has set off for his first day of school.

Sudais Ameen Asif was just two months old when the explosion claimed the lives of his parents and infant brother.

Now the four-year-old, who turns five in October, is donning his new uniform for the first time as he starts his education at Glasgow's Carmyle Primary School.

Previously called Mohammad Sudais, he was formally adopted and given his new name by uncle Mohammad Asif and his aunt in July.

STV News went to Mr Asif's home as he was getting Sudais ready for his first day in P1.

He says the four-year-old will undergo more surgery later in the year to expand his skin.

Sudais' adoptive dad describes this first day at school as nothing short of a "Scottish miracle", while Sudais is just looking forward to making friends.

He has bravely undergone 16 surgeries since first coming to Scotland in February 2014, and could face a large operation when he reaches the age of nine.

Mr Asif told STV News: "As you see, he's a very happy boy.

"We never, never imagined this day would come and to see this day, let alone going to school.

"So this is some sort of Scottish miracle."

He said Sudais' confidence, having already gone to nursery, is growing, adding: "The teachers are wonderful. They are really helping him."

The family is also being helped by specialists including a psychologist to help Sudais deal with any questions from classmates.

Relatives said he had no problems at nursery and that everything went well - Sudais was even nominated most brave pupil at his nursery graduation.

The accident in Pakistan, which caused his burns, claimed the lives of dad Mohammad Ameen, 30, mum Sumaira, 28, and 13-month-old brother Abdul Haseeb.

Sudais' most recent operation took nearly four hours.

A plastic surgeon carried out multiple reconstructive surgeries to strengthen Mohammad's lip and chin and expand his nostril.

Asked if he is excited about going to school for the first time, Sudais replies: "Yeah, I'm going to make lots of new friends."
