Seven Rangers fans were arrested after clashing with riot police in Slovenia.

Officers wielding batons were called after trouble erupted ahead of the Glasgow side's match against Maribor on Thursday night.

Bottles could be heard smashing as fights broke out.

Five of the seven fans were later charged while the other two were fined for alleged offences including attacking police officers.

Other alleged incidents which police are investigating include a laser being aimed at a police helicopter.

A Maribor fan was arrested for allegedly damaging and throwing a bottle into a bus transporting Rangers fans to the airport.

Speaking to STV News, a Maribor Police Directorate spokesman said: "Seven Rangers fans were arrested last night.

"They were taken to the police station and have now been sent home."

Rangers and Maribor drew 0-0 in the second leg of their qualifying third round tie, sending Rangers through 3-1 on aggregate.

They will now join Celtic in the competition's play-off round.

Rangers fan Iain Martin, who was with a group of fans in Slovenia, witnessed the violence.

He said: "I saw an object being thrown which hit a police commander on the back, not harming him in anyway shape or form.

"The chief then proceeded to pick up this and hit a fan at the front with it.

"The fan asked 'why are you hitting me, it's got nothing at all to do with me?'

"The police officer then pulled out a baton and started attacking him.

The police officers then started attacking everybody.

"One police officer then pulled out a pepper spray or tear gas and started spraying it about everywhere.

"Two of my party were really bad with it. One was in his 70s and the other was a 14-year-old boy."
