Dozens of eco houses are set to be built on the grounds of one of Ayrshire's most historic castles.

The custom-built homes have been planned for the site of the 13th century Rowallan Castle.

The estate will feature 66 contemporary homes chosen and tailored by their owners who will become private residents.

The properties - built using thermal insulation, triple-glazed windows and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery - are said to be aimed towards people who want to embrace "a more sustainable and energy efficient lifestyle".

Residents will receive a year's membership to its 19-hole championship golf course, designed by Ryder Cup winning Captain Colin Montgomerie.

George Campbell of Rowallan Castle Estate said: "For the first time in its history, Rowallan Castle Estate will be home to people looking for a more sustainable way of life with this new development of eco houses.

"We are proud of our local community and are excited to see it continue to grow within our grounds."

Construction is anticipated to start in October with an Open Day for existing and interested buyers planned for September 1st at the castle.

Five plots have already been reserved in the early-bird launch and it is expected that the first phase of 20 plots will be sold out by September.
