A housing developer has completed the purchase of Glasgow's former Jordanhill Campus despite protests from campaigners.

Cala Homes plans to spend £100m building more than 400 homes on the University of Strathclyde's iconic building by early 2020.

The properties will range from one-bedroom flats to detached family homes and are set to transform the 31-acre site which has been unoccupied since 2012.

The housebuilder gained planning permission from Glasgow City Council to develop the campus in 2017, however, Jordanhill Community Council members tried to overturn the decision.

The opponents claimed the development will strain local infrastructure and leave too little green space.

It was also argued that the council failed to follow correct legal procedures.

However, the campaigners lost their legal battle to prevent the housing development.

Jim McIntyre, managing director, Cala Homes (West), said: "We're extremely proud of our plans for the former Jordanhill Campus and we'd like to thank the University of Strathclyde for its support throughout the planning and land acquisition process.

"Jordanhill Park is a landmark development for Cala, with its mix of homes to suit all, from young professionals to growing families and downsizers.

"Located in the heart of Glasgow, this development will provide the city with much needed well-built, high quality homes.

"We have an excellent reputation in the UK of providing communities with aspirational and award-winning homes and it is this experience which we intend to extend, with a sensitive approach, at Jordanhill Park."
