A Scottish secondary school has raised more than £300,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The record total has now earned Alva Academy - which became partners with the charity in 2004 - the prestigious Douglas Macmillan Award.

The massive milestone was surpassed thanks to £43,086 collected this year over several weeks of fundraising.

As well as bake sales, bingo teas, and sponsored silences, the staff, parents and pupils also enjoyed puzzle challenges, ceilidhs, a day of dance, a ski-a-thon, a golf challenge and a community fun day.

In total, more than 1000 miles were walked, 1000 miles cycled and 101,450 feet climbed.

The epic fundraising - led by the charity committee comprising of David Clifford, Kirsty Clifford and Shiona Finn - culminated in a huge coffee morning where the sixth years served almost 900 children, local dignitaries, the public and guests over 2000 cups of tea, coffee and cakes.

Teacher David Clifford, who previously accepted a UK Government Point of Light award at 10 Downing Street on behalf of the school's inspiring actions, said: "The dedication and generosity shown by our pupils, staff and wider community never fails to amaze Kirsty, Shiona or myself.

"We have seen the phenomenal work that Macmillan do and we are proud to play a small part in supporting their work.

"We raise money by having fun and by giving up the most valuable thing we can give - our time."

By giving up their time, pupils are now being rewarded and accredited with additional qualifications and certificates not to mention developing their life skills in empathy, respect, confidence and teamwork.

In addition, the money raised has been able to fund all Macmillan Grants for people living in their home county of Clackmannanshire.

Headteacher Scott McEwan said: "Our young people are an inspiration.

"The drive, enthusiasm and extraordinary commitment they have shown defies the common labels placed upon this generation.

"Their work will impact on many lives today and will shape their own lives well beyond school."

Michelle Campbell, fundraising manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, added: "The work that the pupils from Alva Academy have done has been a real inspiration.

"Every penny they have raised, this year and over the past 15 years, has made a massive contribution to supporting people living with cancer. Without such contributions, Macmillan wouldn't be able to function as it does."
