Warnings have been made to pet owners after a number of dogs fell ill after visiting an Ayrshire beach.

South Ayrshire Council has posted a series of signs on Ayr Beach after veterinary practices in the area reported a spate of animals falling ill having visited the beauty spot.

It is unknown what has been making pets unwell, however the council have advised pet owners to keep their dogs on a lead at all times.

Owners are advised to seek veterinary assistance should their pet fall unwell following a visit to the beach.

A spokesperson for the council said: "We're aware that a number of dogs have become unwell on the beach and although there is no obvious reason for this, we've been liaising with SEPA to identify any potential issues.

"As a precaution, signage has been put in place to ask dog owners to keep their pets on the lead."

The authority has also asked members of the public who spot anything unusual to contact waste management on 0300 123 0900.

The warning reads: "Local vet practices are reporting that dogs are becoming ill after visiting Ayr Beach.

"Please keep your dog on a lead and under control at all times.

"If your dog becomes unwell after visiting Ayr Beach seek veterinary advice."
